I used FreeNAS last time but oddly, when I shut it down, my box never turned back on. I had some marginal hardware with that ECS motherboard. I kind of broke the sata connectors and was experiencing some shorting. Cheapo junk. I never had any happy experience with cheapo computer stuff. It was cool that the sata controller was identified by Solaris.
Anyhow, here is take two after a motherboard replacement. Got the mobo I was intending to get all along. The Intel DP35DP.
New motherboard (Intel DP35DP) which uses a better gigabit NIC. I think the SATA controller is better as well.
Speed : 44823560 Bytes/sec.
Speed : 2564.824 MegaBytes/min.
